Starting February 2026, EGTG will be meeting for a monthly reading of new playscripts. Previous plays include Noodle by Simon Barker, and Maschula by David McNeill.
Next up, we will be reading Piping for Victory by Gael Harrison.
Bessie Watson was born in the Grassmarket in Edinburgh in 1900. With her bandy legs and weak lungs, she was an unlikely piper and Scottish dancer but nonetheless, at the age of nine, she caught the eye of Emmaline Pankhurst. She went on to become the nation’s youngest Suffragette and led the women on many of their marches. Piping for Victory by Gael Harrison tells of a lesser-known character in Scotland’s history but one who was no less important for it. Highlighting the tenacious bravery and punishing treatment of this brave group of women, Bessie pipes, dances, laughs and cries, alongside some of the century’s most influential women.
