Hand to God

Hand to God by Robert Askins

Auditions: Wednesday 28th November beginning at 7:30pm and Sunday 2nd December at 2pm. You only need to attend one audition session.

Performances: 9th – 13th April (not including Friday 12th) 7:30pm Assembly Roxy

Mild-mannered, shy Jason has sought solace in his mother’s Christian puppet ministry after the death of his father. In the basement of a conservative church in Cypress, Texas, Jason discovers a blossoming talent for puppetry and thinks that things might just turn out okay. His mom and Pastor Greg seem pleased, the local bully is largely indifferent, and his puppetry has even caught the eye of the cute girl in the youth group.
But the youth group has a monster in their midst: Jason’s puppet, Tyrone. As Tyrone’s foul-mouthed, irreverent, and devilishly funny influence over Jason steadily grows, no one’s secrets are safe. Not content with mere anarchy, Tyrone won’t be satisfied until
he’s dragged everyone to hell and back.

Is Tyrone simply Jason’s voice of grief and rage, or is Tyrone something far more sinister? Is Tyrone what he claims to be: the devil?

Hand to God, a play the New Yorker called Sesame Street meets The Exorcist, is a hilarious, lightening-paced, very adult comedy that explores the startling fragile nature of faith, morality, and familial ties that bind

Total parts 5, comprising of 3 men and 2.

Jason (15) – Shy, mild mannered, polite. A sweet boy. A mamma’s boy. A push-over. Intimidated by Timothy and in love with Jessica.
Tyrone (played by Jason) – The polar opposite of Jason. Aggressive. Foul mouthed. Overly sexual. Violent. He says and does things that Jason only dreams of in his darkest dreams.

Margery (40+) – Grieving. Tired. At her breaking point. Desperate. Having recently lost her husband, she is trying to do the best she can as she navigates her new reality.

Jessica (15) – Sarcastic. Dry. Wise beyond her years. She recognises the futility of her situation but is unfazed by it. She likes Jason, even though she thinks he’s a bit weird. She tolerates Timothy, even though she thinks he’s a dick.
Jolene (played by Jessica) – Everything someone who was inexperienced with sex would think is highly sexual. Stereotypical. Jessica Rabbit but raunchier.

Timothy (15) – Juvenile delinquent. Vulgar. Tough guy. Sexually frustrated. Kinky. In love with Margery.

Pastor Greg (40+) – A man of God. Kind. Patient. Lonely. Pathetic. Moral. In love with Margery.

Three of the five characters are written as teenagers. The script specifically states these are to be played by actors who are not the character’s ages. The subject matter, language, and sexual situations presented in the script are all for mature audiences and mature actors. The teen characters will all be cast with actors who have a playing age of 20-25.
All actors except Pastor Greg will operate puppets at some point during the show.
The show is set in Cypress, Texas. As such, a Texas accent will be required for performance. You will be expected to give the accent a go during auditions.
Due to the sex scenes contained in the play, the parts of Margery and Timothy will require the actors to perform in a state of undress. For Margery, this will mean performing with an open blouse while wearing a bra. For Timothy this will mean performing in only boxer briefs.

Auditions will be held on Wednesday 28th November beginning at 19:30 and again on Sunday 2nd December beginning at 14:00. Auditions and rehearsals will be held at 18 Buccleuch Place, 1st floor in the Graduate Association offices. You only need to attend
one audition session. There is no need to prepare anything for the audition. Audition sides are available for perusal. If you would like a copy of the audition sides, please contact the director, David Grimes, at davidegrimes@hotmail.com

If you cannot make either of the audition dates and wish to audition, please contact us prior to the auditions to arrange another time. We will see people on ad hoc dates on an as needed basis prior to the last audition date. Audition times after the 2nd of December will be arranged only if we are unable to cast the production based upon those we have seen at the conclusion of the announced audition dates.

Rehearsals will begin on Sunday 9th December at 7:30pm. Rehearsals will be 3 times a week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday nights until February 10th when rehearsals will change to Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday nights. Rehearsals will begin at 7:30pm each night ending at 10:30pm. The rehearsal schedule will be developed to accommodate any unavailability listed on the audition forms. The rehearsals will take a break over the holidays; however, the puppets will be available for the actors to take home and practice with prior to our break.

All cast members are required to be members of EGTG for insurance purposes. Membership fees are £25 and covers the first show in which the member takes part.
