Why did Martin Caplan die?

A charismatic young man kills himself. A year later a chance after-dinner remark reminds family and friends of their loss. As the evening progresses, secrets come to light that threaten the close-knit group’s marriages, friendships and business partnership. A tense psychological drama by the author of An Inspector Calls.

EGTG presents J.B. Priestley’s Dangerous Corner,  the penultimate production of its 70th – platinum – season. 

Originally premiered at the Lyric Theatre, London in 1932, Dangerous Corner is the first of J.B. Priestley’s ‘Time Plays’ – so called for its use of time as a central theatrical device. The play would go on to worldwide success, inspiring a number of film and TV adaptations, and even a novelisation, bucking the trend of the more often seen page to stage. 

Dangerous Corner will be the second Priestley play director Martin Foreman (Hay Fever, The Satyricon) has presented with EGTG. In 2016, he headed up an award-winning performance of The Rose and Crown at the SCDA One Act Festival which would go on to enjoy a successful revival at the Fringe the same year. 

Commenting on his desire to bring this time-hopping drama to the stage in EGTG’s 70th year, Director Martin Foreman said: “I have always been a fan of Priestley’s plays and the skill with which he uncovers the secrets beneath people’s lives while portraying the façades that bind them to each other. Dangerous Corner, like his better-known An Inspector Calls, is a classic of the genre, but in several ways more daring with its references to drug use and same-sex desire. I am lucky to have an extremely talented cast to create this absorbing drama which will resonate with the audience long after the final curtain.”
