How far will a grieving mother go to protect her dead son’s reputation?

Following on from Nick Payne’s cerebral drama Incognito, EGTG’s season of the mind continues with Suddenly Last Summer by Tennessee Williams with a four night run at Assembly Roxy 24 – 27 June 2025.

Catherine Holly has already been committed to a mental institution by her Aunt Violet, and now she is being threatened with a lobotomy to stop her revealing the secrets behind the mysterious and violent death of her cousin, Sebastian, which occurred, Suddenly Last Summer.

One half of the Garden District double-bill, Suddenly Last Summer is often noted for its lyricism, with Williams’ himself noting that it was “perhaps the most poetic” he had written. Originally set in the mid-30’s, the play opened off-Broadway in 1958, before being made into a film by Columbia Pictures in 1959, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn and Montgomery Clift. It wasn’t until the early nineties that the play made its Broadway and West End debut, along with being adapted for BBC TV under the direction of Royal National Theatre head Richard Eyre and starring Maggie Smith, Rob Lowe, Richard E. Grant and Natasha Richardson.

EGTG’s production will be directed by Ross Hope and regular collaborators Abbye Eva and Emma Carter. The trio have most recently worked together on All About My Mother (Nov 2018) and Copenhagen (May 2023), with Hope having a long directorial history with the group including the highly praised Jerusalem in 2013.

They are joined by an all-star cast including EGTG members Helen Goldie (Copenhagen 2023) and Caden Scott (The Fastest Clock in the Universe 2024), and newcomers Kirsty McColm and Sinclair Davis (Amadeus, Strawmoddie Theatre Company).

Suddenly Last Summer will play at Assembly Roxy, Upstairs Tuesday 24 to Friday 27 June 2025. Tickets cost £15 (£3 discount for EGTG members with discount code) and are available to purchase from the Assembly Roxy Box Office.
